Operator Series #1: Speed. Why it matters. How to access it.

Talk to any owner, franchisee, or QSR operator today and ask them: what things would you like to improve? In my experience, speed usually becomes the topic.

It's been that way for decades. And for good reason—after all, the 'Q' in QSR stands for quick.

Service speed is one of the strongest indicators of day-to-day revenue performance. In a drive-thru, faster cars mean more cars. More cars mean more transactions. And in a high-volume environment, those extra transactions during a two-hour lunch rush can represent a significant portion of the day's entire revenue.

The math is straightforward. The execution rarely is.

About That… How We've Been Measuring Speed

Most operators approach it in the same way: Set a target. Post the number. Remind the team. Do all this, and hope the lunch rush doesn't blow it up.

The target itself is usually a perceived average: a rough benchmark of what a good shift looks like. The problem, though, is that drive-thrus run in waves. And the moments that matter most—the breakfast rush, the lunch window, the Friday evening surge—are exactly the times when that average breaks down.

High-volume windows are typically the most profitable. They're also the most stressful. Staff are stretched, orders are stacking, and the pressure to move cars amplifies. Speed targets that made sense at 10am become impossible at 12:15, and nobody has the data to know why.

Why Speed Matters

Beyond throughput, service speed is one of the clearest signals a guest can receive about the quality of your operation.

A customer who waits too long doesn't just leave frustrated. They leave with a comparison. Every drive-thru they visit after yours becomes a benchmark—and if that benchmark is consistently above your speed, you lose out. In a market where guests have no shortage of options, a slow experience is one of the quickest ways to erode your repeat visit rate.

Speed also tells the story of something operators rarely get to see clearly: what actually happens during peak periods. Where the bottlenecks form. What slows down under pressure. Whether the issue is at the order point, the window, or somewhere in between. Without that visibility, operators manage by feel rather than fact.

What Enabling Speed Looks Like

Simply telling a team to move cars faster doesn't always work. What does work is this: remove the friction that's slowing you down. Let's talk about how that happens.

Integrated payments and loyalty recognition helps eliminate fumbling at the window. Smart order sequencing matches meals to the proper car without confusion. Vehicle movement is detected and tracked to help staff manage bottlenecks. Metrics display so that the team can see exactly where they stand in real time, with no debrief.

Critically, it's enabled by individual performance data. When a team member sees their own speed metrics alongside the rest of the crew, accountability becomes a part of the shift. Targets stop being something you just post on a wall. It becomes something the team actually owns.

That's what Vavoom is built to do. We surface the data that makes speed improvable, not just measurable. We give operators the knowledge they need to understand their peak periods, and we help teams move cars without sacrificing the interactions that bring those customers back.

Speed without service is just a faster way to lose a guest. The goal is both.
